What is Reiki?

reiki (1)Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When your energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

History of Reiki

Dr. Mikao Usui…Reiki was discovered in the mid 1800’s by Japanese born Buddist monk, Dr. Mikao Usui (1856-1926). Dr. Usui was asked by a student how Jesus facilitated the  healing miracles that he performed. The question planted a seed and Dr. Usui set path to find the answer. He traveled to the holy mountains of Kori Yama where he fasted and meditated for 21 days in order to attain a higher state of consciousness, which he believed would empower him with the healing energy. On the 21st day he became frustrated and was about to give up and leave when a spiritual energy came down through the top of his head and he became enlightened. The energy brought with it Reiki Ryoho, which is the ability to heal.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi…One of Dr. Usui’s pupils was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Dr.Hayashi continued in the steps of Dr.Usui by opening a Reiki clinic which remained opened until 1940.  He became a student of Dr. Usui on May 1925 and he is one of the 21 students of Dr. Usui. Dr. Hayashi was a retired Naval Officer and surgeon when he studied with Dr. Usui for 10 months before Dr. Usui passed away in March 1926. Dr. Hayashi developed a new style of Reiki, which has the same energy and lineage as Usui Reiki, and many of the original techniques.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata…Mrs. Hawayo Takata is a Hawaiian woman of a Japanese descent born in 1900. After the death of her husband and her sister she became sick and decided to travel to Japan in search of a doctor who could perform an operation deemed necessary. While in Japan she felt strongly that the operation (for tumor, gallstones, and appendicitis) would be unnecessary, and she inquired if there was an alternative way for her to be healed. She was referred to Dr. Hayashi’s clinic.

Mrs. Takata began receiving regular weekly treatments. Over a period of several weeks her health improved drastically. She was amazed and asked Dr. Hayashi to teach her how to transmit Reiki energies to others. He agreed to teach her Reiki One and Reiki Two, she studied with him from 1936-1938. She was the first to bring Hayashi’s teachings to the west, where she returned to Hawaii to practice Reiki.

In the 1970’s she began teaching other Reiki Masters. For over 40 years she used storytelling to teach people about the system she called Reiki and it’s history. By the time of her transition on December 11, 1980 she trained over 22 Reiki Masters. It’s from these original Masters that Reiki had spread in the world outside of Japan.

Description of a Typical Session

The morning of your session I suggest increasing your intake of water. If you don’t drink water juice is ok. You want to hydrate to help with the process of releasing toxins. HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! Please dress comfortably in loose fitting clothing.

There isn’t a need to arrive more than 5 minutes early. I always cleanse the healing space and meditate prior to sessions. First time clients should plan your session to last up to 60-90 minutes long. Time varies per person. I will describe in full what to expect before we start and answer and any questions.

For the session, you will rest comfortably (fully clothed) on a massage table. If you are unable to lay down Reiki can also be performed with you sitting in a chair. The session will then proceed with the me moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at your head or feet. You might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation.  A session can either be hands-on, where I will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where I will hold my hands slightly above your body. If you prefer not to be touched you can indicate this to me before we begin.

I also use a variety of crystals (Crystal Healing) and will place them on the chakras or around the body.  Different crystals contain unique energy that when placed on a chakra, can draw energy to that chakra, increasing energy flow and balance. For example…using a Rose Quartz will help to bring in unconditional self-love and peace, aiding with emotional pain of grief or anger.

Some sessions I may be guided to do Shamanic Healing. I will step myself aside and allow spirit to enter, guide me, assist or take over with the healing as needed. Different Shamanic Healing Tools are used such as rattels or smudging the aura field.

Sound Therapy (Tibetan Singing Bowl or Quartz Singing Bowl) is also offered as part of the healing sessions. The vibrations of the bowls help in order to relax your mind and body.

Once the session is over I will gently rub your shoulder, giving you time to “come back”. If needed for additional grounding I may have you hold on to stones such as Smokey Quartz or Hematite. When feeling alert I will have you slowly sit up and offer you some water. From there I will share anything I picked up on during the session and answer any questions you may have about the experience.
